Opportunity: Ugandan Jackfruit for Vegan and Plant-Based Markets

We have partnered with a credible Ugandan agricultural exporter to supply premium jackfruit, known locally as “Ffenne.”

Why Jackfruit?

Uganda’s jackfruit is abundant, versatile, and gaining recognition globally as a plant-based meat substitute. With its fibrous, meaty texture and natural sweetness, it is a perfect fit for the growing vegan and vegetarian food industries.

Key Characteristics:

  • Nutritional Value: Rich in potassium, calcium, iron, magnesium, and vitamins B6 and C.

  • Flavour Profile:

    • Ripe fruit → sweet, subtle banana-like flavor.

    • Unripe fruit → cooked and used as a meat substitute.

  • Size & Appearance: Large fruit weighing 10–25kg, with spiky skin.

  • Flesh Varieties: Available in yellow, red, and white pulp.

  • Harvest Season: Peak harvests in November–December, with supply available year-round.

Market Potential:

  • Vegan and vegetarian food manufacturers (jackfruit meat substitute).

  • Retailers seeking plant-based product lines.

  • Processors producing dried jackfruit, chips, flour, and seed-based products.

  • Export demand is rising across Europe, North America, and Asia.
